ENVIRONMENT
We recognize the importance of building a sustainable future for our customers and have focused on maximizing the efficiency of our own store operations in the areas of energy and waste.
WASTE & RECYCLING
Reducing waste and increasing operational recycling rates represents the clearest and most tangible way for us to reduce our immediate environmental impacts. We've been working hard to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill from our offices and stores in the UK. During 2011 we recycled 71% of all waste from our UK stores, up from 64% in 2010. In addition to improving store recycling rates, we continued to push our waste backhauling programme, via our UK distribution center's on-site recycling center In the same period we recycled a total of 4,195 tonnes (2011: 3,676 tonnes) of cardboard and plastic, generating additional revenue of £394,775 (2011: £277,925) for the business.
CODE OF BUSINESS ETHICS
It is fundamental to the way we do things around here that all employees and everyone associated with Young Looks observe and support the Company's values and approach to doing business around the world.
Our reputation and the reputation of our business partners is of paramount importance to us and to this end we ask that every person associated with Young Looks employs high standards of personal and business integrity.
We live in rapidly changing times and it is no longer enough simply to share common goals and aspirations. We also need to be able to express clearly how we live up to our responsibilities in practice. We have outlined the ethical standards we expect from ourselves and from those with whom we do business, either directly or indirectly, as we operate and grow our business globally.
The Young Looks Group Code of Business Ethics is given to everyone associated with New Look at the start of their relationship with the business.
ETHICAL TRADING
What is ethical trading?
Ethical sourcing is about acting responsibly towards the people who make our products by supporting our suppliers in providing good quality jobs.
Our objectives
The Young Looks Group shares the same ethical objectives to:
We believe in giving everyone involved in our supply chain an opportunity to live a decent life. We want our customers and our staff to feel good about Young Look's products and how they are sourced. We believe in raising the profile of what fashion retailers are doing in ethical trade.
How we work
We work with 100% of Young Look's supply chain to improve working conditions for the people who make our products. We ask all our suppliers to:
RESPONSIBLE SOURCING
Operating in a sustainable manner is central to the way we conduct business at Young Looks. We have strong sustainable partnerships with our suppliers and external experts to integrate considerations for people and the planet into our business.
We're passionate about sourcing our products in a fair and responsible manner. All our suppliers are required to sign up to our 'Ethical Sourcing Aims' and our ethical teams around the world work closely with suppliers to improve factory conditions and reduce environmental impact.
ANIMAL WELFARE
At Young Looks we believe that it's never acceptable to harm animals in the manufacturing or testing of our products and for this reason we developed an animal welfare policy to cover all products retailed by us. We were nominated for the large fashion company award at the 2011 RSPCA Good Business Awards, winners in 2010 and highly commended in 2009.
Animal Protection
Young Looks Group believes that it is never acceptable to harm animals in the manufacture or testing of its products. Because of this we have developed an animal welfare policy that covers all products retailed by Young Looks. This policy is divided into two sections and details our stance on both Animal Protection and Animal Testing.
The first part of our policy covers any animal derived materials used in our products. This part of our policy covers the following areas:
Animal Fur: We will not use any real fur in our products. This includes both farmed fur and fur which may be a by-product of the meat industry.
Endangered Species: We will not use any materials derived from species that appear on the CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) or IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) lists of endangered species.
Leather or Skin Products: We will not use any leather or skin materials that are obtained from live skinning or live boiling. All leather used for New Look must be a by-product of the meat industry. We will not use Karakul or any other leather or skin materials that are the products of unnatural abortions.
Live-Plucked Feather or Down: We will not use feathers or down obtained from the live plucking of birds.
Australian Merino Wool: We will not source merino wool from Australia due to the widespread practice of mulesing in its production.
Mongolian Lambs Fur: Due to the practices involved in the traditional methods of slaughter we will not use this sheepskin variety.
In addition to the specific points above Young Looks expects all animal derived materials used in our products to have come from animals treated humanely and according to the recommendations on animal welfare set out by the OIE in their Animal Health Codes.
Animal Testing
The second part of our policy covers the testing of cosmetics on animals. Young Looks believes that animal testing for cosmetic purposes is not acceptable. We recognize that customer safety is of paramount importance but fully believe that this can be assured without the use of animal testing.
Because of this we will not conduct, commission, or be party to any animal testing of cosmetic products or ingredients. We will also not knowingly purchase ingredients, formulations or products from suppliers that have conducted, commissioned or been party to animal testing for cosmetic purposes after our agreed cut-off date. Our agreed cut-off date for animal testing is 1st August 1994, which is in line with the Humane Cosmetics Standard's requirements.
Occasionally we may use animal derived ingredients in our cosmetic products but these must be collected without harm to animals.
We recognize the importance of building a sustainable future for our customers and have focused on maximizing the efficiency of our own store operations in the areas of energy and waste.

What is ethical trading?
Ethical sourcing is about acting responsibly towards the people who make our products by supporting our suppliers in providing good quality jobs.
Our objectives
The Young Looks Group shares the same ethical objectives to:
- Be fair: to our customers, suppliers, employees and the people who make our products.
- Be a good neighbour to the world.
- Deliver value and ethical values to our customers.
- Continuously improve: our intention is to improve everything we can at every opportunity, however we recognise that we cannot solve all of the problems in our supply chain overnight. Where big changes are practical we want to make those changes and make them stick. Where that isn't practical we always work to make little changes that will make a difference.
- Ensure that ethical trading is central to how we operate.
We believe in giving everyone involved in our supply chain an opportunity to live a decent life. We want our customers and our staff to feel good about Young Look's products and how they are sourced. We believe in raising the profile of what fashion retailers are doing in ethical trade.

We work with 100% of Young Look's supply chain to improve working conditions for the people who make our products. We ask all our suppliers to:
- Take ownership of any problems.
- Work with us to tackle problems.
- Be open and honest with us.
